Dhaka (24/7 News Network): Even as the rebel soldiers who revolted against the officers at the BDR Headquarters in Dhaka yesterday, surrendered after being assured of amnesty by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the mutiny spread to other areas of the country.
The rebel soldiers at BDR Headquarters laid down arms and surrendered before the Army yesterday. However, fresh gunbattle reported from Rajshahi, Feni and Chittagong, as rebel soldiers are still holding up in these cities.
Over 77 people including 67 BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) and Army officials were killed in the gunbattle yesterday, when a group of over 250 rebel soldiers launched a sudden attack on the officers. The dead officials included Shakeel Ahmed, the Director General of BDR and many other top officials.
The rebel soldiers were protesting against the discrimination and bad treatment. They were demanding better pay structure and improvement in their standard of living.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who had offered an amnesty to the rebels, will address the nation shortly. The rebels have been given surrender by 2 PM today or face action.
