Bangladesh forms committee to reconstitute border force after mutiny

DHAKA, March 31 (Xinhua) -- The Bangladeshi government has formed a four-member committee to reconstitute the paramilitary border force Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) following the bloody mutiny staged by BDR members on Feb. 25-26.

Name and uniform of the border guards will be changed as part of restructuring the BDR, Commerce Minister Faruk Khan told Xinhua on Tuesday.

"We'll soon reconstitute the border force with a new name and uniform," said Khan, who was also assigned to coordinate the probe into the mutiny.

He said the committee, headed by new BDR chief Major General Mainul Islam, was formed on March 23 to report on restructuring and renaming of the border force.

Khan said, "Based on report of the committee the government will take next course of action in this connection."

He said the new force will be constituted with suggestion of all relevant authorities.

BDR members staged mutiny against their commanding officers deputed from the army at the BDR headquarters in capital Dhaka on Feb. 25 morning.

The mutiny which ended on Feb. 26 evening left more than 70 people dead, mostly army officers including the former BDR chief Major General Shakil Ahmed.

Officials said the government hastened its move to bring changes in name and uniform of BDR as the commanding army officers have refused to wear the uniform of paramilitary force.

The paramilitary force BDR, with a total of 67,000 members, was established in 1972 after Bangladesh's independence.

BDR is under the Home Ministry, but its senior commanding officers are all from the army.
