(RTTNews) - Three rebel border guards of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) paramilitary force, who gunned down BDR chief Major-General Shakil Ahmed and other army officers during the February 25-26 mutiny, have been identified, media reports said Wednesday.
"We've identified the killer of BDR D-G Major-General Shakil Ahmed and at least two others who gunned down other senior officers," the reports quoted an unnamed investigating officer as saying.
Declining to name the three, the officer said the trio, who are already in custody, were involved in the killing at the onset of the mutiny. They reportedly claimed a group of six to seven, who first opened fire at the Darbar Hall, were BDR soldiers and not outsiders.
However, there was no official confirmation on the reports.
Officials earlier said a BDR soldier who was believed to have killed Shakil's wife was arrested.
Earlier, investigators said they found clues that outsiders in uniform intruded the BDR headquarters in the capital Dhaka ahead of the rebellion while Commerce Minister Colonel (Retd) Faruq Khan, who has been tasked with coordinating the investigations, said Islamist militants might have a hand in the carnage.
Of the 650 BDR rebels--who were detected through video footage, interrogation of arrested soldiers and on the basis the statements given by officers and family members who survived the carnage--over 150 were directly involved in killings, looting of arms and explosives from armories, an officer said.
