BANGLADESH INSTITUTE TO DETECT MELAMINE IN MILK, BABY FOODS

DHAKA, Apr 01, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institute (BSTI) has decided to examine all types of milk and baby foods made from milk products to detect the presence of melamine.

BSTI also fixed the charge for testing melamine at Tk 8,000 (US$116.28) while the examination fee to collect CM license at Tk 5,000.

The decisions came from BSTI's 23rd council meeting held at its central office Tuesday with Industries Minister Dilip Barua in chair, said an official release.

The Minister directed the officials concerned to strengthen their drive against fake and adulterated products across the country.

Apart from ensuring the health security of local consumers, the quality of Bangladeshi products will have to be upgraded to the international standard to increase export to the global market, he said.

Dilip Barua said the government will turn BSTI into a modern standard control organization to build Bangladesh into an industrial country.
