Factional clash injures 4 BCL female activists at Dhaka Univ

DU Correspondent

Rival groups of female activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League clashed at Shamsunnahar Hall of Dhaka University early Tuesday, leaving four injured.
Hall sources said the clash ensued when the immediate-past organising secretary of the hall unit BCL Sonika Sharmin Swarna boarded nine girls in room no 102, known as ganaroom (an eight-bedded room where 16 students reside).
Knowing it, another group, led by Nupur Khanam Duli, challenged the girls after Monday midnight and asked them to show documents of their seat allocation and the girls told her to contact Swarna as she had permitted them to stay in the room.
When Duli was talking with the girls, Swarna along with her fellows rushed into the room and was locked in an altercation with Duli.
‘At one stage, Swarna attacked Duli. Supporters of Duli retaliated with hockey sticks and cricket stamps kept in the room by Swarna’s supporters. Four were injured in the clash,’ said a witness who was inside the room.
Swarna contacted her male fellows of Chhatra League, said another witness, adding that more than a hundred Chhatra League activists gathered in front of the hall gate within minutes. The male activists hurled abusive words on the students.
Informed, the university pro-vice-chancellor, Harun-or-Rashid, and proctor KM Saiful Islam Khan visited the hall.
The hall authorities formed a probe-body, headed by the hall provost UAB Razia Akhtar Banu.
Swarna, a Master’s student of drawing and painting, Duli and Jesmin Jahan Jhuma, third year students of the same department, and Nusrat Nisha, a second year student of institute of education and research, were injured and given first aid by the hall physician.
Talking to New Age, Duli said, ‘When I was talking with the girls in room 102, Swarna attacked us.’
The hall unit Chhatra League general secretary, Mamtaz Begum, said the hall committee had cancelled the membership of Swarna as she was trying to create an unstable situation in the hall.
Talking to New Age, Swarna said she was attacked in a planed manner and it was instigated by Chhatra League central president Mahmud Hasan Ripon and its Dhaka University unit president Sohel Rana Tipu.
