Scotland Yard team to assist Bangladesh to investigate border guards mutiny

DHAKA, March 10 (Xinhua) -- A four-member Scotland Yard team will arrive in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka on Wednesday to assist the country to investigate Feb. 25 border guards mutiny, said visiting UK Minister for International Development Mike Foster on Tuesday.

The UK minister, who arrived on Tuesday morning for a three-day visit to Bangladesh, told reporters at the airport that the Scotland Yard team will work jointly with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to support the Bangladesh government.

The minister, who strongly condemned the bloody incident of mutiny, said the British government will continue its support to Bangladesh for the country's development.

The Bangladesh government earlier sought the assistance from the Scotland Yard after the bloody mutiny which last over 30 hours leaving more than 70 people dead.

Following a request of the Bangladesh government, a two-member advance team of FBI arrived in Dhaka on Sunday to conduct preliminary assessment.

More than one thousand members of the paramilitary border force Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) staged mutiny against their commanding officers deputed from the army at the BDR headquarters in Dhaka on Feb. 25 morning.

The mutiny ended on Feb. 26 evening with the surrender of mutinous BDR members following negotiations between the government and the mutineers.

The Bangladesh government and the army constituted two separate probe committees to investigate the mutiny.

Bangladesh police has sued over 1,000 BDR members, on charges including treason, killing army officers, arson, looting and holding people.

Dozens of suspected mutineers including alleged mutiny leader Touhidul Alam, a deputy assistant director of BDR, have been arrested under an "Operation Rebel Hunt" mission across the country.
