Staff Reporter

Minister for Industries Dilip Barua yesterday said national development, prosperity and progress could not be ensured unless unemployment is removed from the country.

"New employment must be created by means of promoting small and medium enterprises to achieve economic progress," the minister said while exchanging views with the executives of SME Foundation on Sunday.

Emphasising the need for increasing income and purchasing power of people in order to increase the GDP, the industries minister said, "We have to emphasise upon growth of Small and Medium Enterprises for achieving the target."

"We have to initiate short and long-term plan and implement them to create new entrepreneurs," he said.

Dilip Barua said SME Day will be observed in near future to create awareness among people about it.

Presided over by Acting Managing Director of the Foundation Professor Dr. Momtaz Uddin Ahmed, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by DGM Dr Yeamin Akbory and DGM Dr Nurul Quadir.

The Industries Minister said SME Foundation has no alternative in creating new entrepreneurs and generating employment.

The Foundation shall have to find out new sectors as well. People will have to be motivated to create new enterprises for creating employment. Failing to do that the objectives of this Foundation will not be fulfilled, he said.

Dilip Barua said widespread unemployment is a great barrier on the way to country's economic advancement. Day by day arable land is shrinking due to increase in dwelling houses, river erosion and other factors.

He said, closing of the Adamjee Jute Mills', known as the 2nd largest jute mills in Asia, was a wrong step of the previous government.
