Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) leaders yesterday urged the government to introduce a permanent salary structure and a national policy for the media houses in order to maintain peace and discipline.

Terming the situation in the media "unstable," they expressed deep concern over the prevailing situation, says a press release.

They said a vested quarter is trying to create annoyance and dissatisfaction among the media persons like those of the academic institutions, which is not expected at all during the regime of a democratic government.

The journalist leaders said this at a meeting at the National Press Club in the city.

They further said that an awful situation is prevailing in the Ittefaq and journalists and staff of the house are being given death threats. So, immediate government interference is needed to resolve the problem.

Union members even cannot enter the Ittefaq office. On the other hand, recruitment circulars are being published that are not expected.

The leaders called on all the journalists not to respond to such advertisements.

They said journalists, employees and press workers of The Bangladesh Observer do not get salaries for 78 months. Even the state-run news agency BSS is gripped with irregularities and corruption for long. The problems need immediate solutions.

DUJ President Shah Alamgir hoped that the government would look into the problems seriously and find possible solutions.
