20 hurt as Tahrir men, cops clash

Staff Correspondent

At least 20 people, including five policemen, were injured in a clash between police and members of Hizb ut-Tahrir in front of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the city after Jumma prayers yesterday.

Witnesses said police charged baton on Hizb ut-Tahrir activists to disperse them as they brought out a processing by blocking the road at about 1:30pm.

The Hizb ut-Tahrir activists threw brickbats at police, ensuing the clash that lasted for half an hour.

Traffic movement in the Baitul Mukarram mosque area was halted and hundreds of panicked devotees ran helter shelter to save them.

The Hizb ut-Tahrir men brought out the procession demanding release of their leaders and workers arrested by members of the law enforcement agencies in different times on charge of distributing leaflets containing anti-state and provocative contents.

Farid Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Paltan police station, told The Daily Star that they arrested 10 Hizb ut-Tahrir men who staged demonstration by halting traffic movement in the area.

Farid admitted that they resorted to baton charge to disperse the protesters. Around 300 Hizb ut-Tahrir activists took part in the demonstration.

The leaders and workers of the Islamist outfit, however, claimed that over 50 activists were injured when police charged batons on their peaceful procession.

A case was filed with Paltan thana in this connection, police said.

Hizb ut-Tahrir, a controversial Islamist outfit, is one of those organisations upon which police keep a close eye on suspicion of militant linkage.

On March 13, the government brought sedition charges against 27 Hizb ut-Tahrir operatives who were detained earlier in 14 police stations in the city on charge of “distributing provocative leaflets” over last month's BDR carnage.
