Mohammedan SC Clinch CityCell Super Cup

Mohammedan Sporting Club beat bitter rivals Abahani Krira Chakra 1-0 in a lively encounter which saw nearly 45,000 fans show-up in the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.

A first-half goal from Nigerian striker John Goodwin put the Black & Whites in front after some good work in the box from the Dhaka-based club's midfielders.

Abahani KC responded with a fierce second-half display which saw the side almost score on several occasions. But with Bangladesh International Aminul in goal, Mohammedan defended well, and held on to their lead until the final whistle at the packed stadium in the heart of the country.

The win meant that after a drought in trophies for over four years, Dhaka Mohammedan SC finally conquered their bitter rivals and clinched the CityCell Super Cup. The match was especially celebrated as it was graced by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who watched the encounter, and watched over the presentation ceremony.

Mohammedan SC was awarded $147,000, while the man-of-the-match, and the best referee of the tournament won $1,500 respectively. The match also marked a record in attendance
figures for the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, with just over 44,000 fans showing up for the coveted encounter.

Previously, 40,000 fans turned up at the same stadium to witness the SAFF Championship Final between hosts Bangladesh and the Maldives in January 2003 where the home side clinched their maiden SAFF Championship title beating their opponents 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in normal time.
