Madonna to appeal rejected adoption bid

It was Madonna's bad luck to get a judge who follows the letter of the law. On Friday, the pop star's request to adopt a second child from Malawi was rejected, with the judge citing requirements that adoptive parents reside in the country for 18 to 24 months, The Associated Press reported.

The country's child welfare minister had come out Thursday in support of the pop superstar's application to adopt 3-year-old Chifundo "Mercy" James.

The residency requirement was waived to allow Madonna to take David Banda, now 3, out of the impoverished, AIDS-stricken country in 2006 before that adoption was finalized in 2008. Madonna has appealed the court ruling, her lawyer said Friday. "I just filed the notice of appeal this afternoon on instructions from my client," Alan Chinula told Usmagazine.com.
